CALM [the Campaign Against Living Miserably] to support Suicide awareness and help after losing my son Hayden when he took his life at just 19 years old.
With WW2 on the horizon many people, especially married and those who had survived WW1 just 20 years previous, were not too happy about it.
To the writer, just 18 years old, it meant release from a job as a sale trainee at the local furnishing store. Interesting
and I learnt a lot which was of interest in later life, but I was eager for excitement and adventure like most ‘teenagers in a hurry’.
As told in the story I was already in the Territorial Army and one of the first called up. During my time at the shop I was friendly with a girl in the Dairy next door and we married after my return. Little realising until years later that she was a childhood sweetheart having changed her Christian name, but that’s another story.
We were married for 57 very happy years and had a wonderful daughter who together with my grandson helped me with this book. My world fell apart with the death of my wife in 2002.
I hope this book goes some way to show that the war and being a P.O.W was not all doom and gloom and that life was what you made it, even in captivity. i have never regretted one moment and it was a great experience. Anything I have left out can be read in dozens of other accounts.
